Scarred may be at the top of my list. Actually, it most definitely is in my top 10.
Scarred is a fractured fantasy retelling where the villain gets the happy ending. Didn’t think you needed that? Well you thought wrong. It’s meant to be a Lion King retelling. A little cleaver with the male MMC being called “the scarred prince”. Get it?
Scarred is full of 19th century-esk kingdoms, hierarchies, characters, fashion and drama. It’s a little dark. It’s got a kick a** FMC, a dark and handsome MMC who is a little messed up. I would still class it as fantasy, even without magic and dragons and wards. This was a joy to read from beginning to end.
LOVED the split POV, loved the narration. Lived the time period and how it almost seemed like it was modern.....when it isn't. LOVED THE 🌶SPICE🌶 We love a morally grey but not morally grey MMC.
Scarred had me grinning, blushing, heart racing...and some other things racing....if you get what I mean. What I really liked was Sara, the FMC. Seeing a strong female lead is always appreciated in fantasy books. You know the ladies who kick a**? Yeah, those ones. I’m not gonna lie, there was just the slightest hint of a red flag in Sara and Tristan’s relationship. Sure, I get the reason she’s agreed to marry his brother, I understand why she is conflicted, I even understand why she falls in love with Tristan. I fell in love with him to. If I saw a dark and supposedly “scary” many with a body like that, who can draw and is affectionate to his a**hole of a brother’s bastard son, I would love him to. I get it. Scarred is a little dark, so it makes sense, and I get it. He’s a bad boy with an oddly straight moral compass (whatever that means). He treats her like a queen. He takes stress off of her. He lets her just exist when it’s the 2 of them together. So yeah, it might be a little messed up, but I get it.
I would highly recommend reading if you want something where the villain gets the happy ending. This really is it.
