If you want a feel-good book, look no further. This is your place. I will start by simply saying I smiled a lot reading this, and it was a simply a sweet book and I enjoyed it.
Olive Torres believes that she is fated with bad luck, unlike her identical twin sister, Ami, who seems to have fate and luck on her side since they were little. Luck seemed to turn in Olive’s favour when, on Ami’s wedding day, everyone besides Olive and her sworn enemy, Ethan Thomas (and brother of the groom), get severe food poisoning. This leaves a fully paid honeymoon to Maui up for grabs. Forced to play newlyweds, Olive and Ethan find themselves in closer proximity than they would like. Soon, they find themselves liking each other more than they ever thought.
The book is written from Olive’s point of view; we see her have little realizations about herself throughout the book. Christina and Lauren have taken the time to give us in depth thought processes for Olive. The plot twists even more when you least expect it, with a happy surprise at the end; a true page turner. The chapters follow on neatly from each other without any big jump in time or location.
Now to the fun part.
This book is nothing but pure joy and happiness. If there was a live reaction camera, you would see me massaging my cheeks because they hurt so much form smiling, or my mouth agape in genuine shock. This is very on brand for Christina Lauren. Their books give you the heart butterflies, they make you laugh, they’re feel good, and, sometimes, they make you even cry a little. You’re following an enemies to lovers trope with The Unhoneymooners. It’s a romantic book without being cheesy. The detail they have put into this book is amazing, from the description of Olive’s bridesmaid dress to the scenery in Hawaii.
I like how they write about intimacy. They’re covert in their writing, almost a little more subtle I the way they write. From their books, I’ve found that there is more build up to the act than the act itself. There’s a lot of back story and detail and little touches or looks or situations. In this case, there’s the entire boat scene, the massage scene and, my personal favorite scene, the mai-tais. I get the giggles reading it; they just make you happy.
I didn’t really miss the rampant sex and brazen descriptions. I like that it was soft and sweet and had me giggling and kicking my legs a little. Christina Lauren Books always do that to me. And I will forever love it.
